My Top 5 Game of Thrones Scenes

When you play the game of thrones, you win, or you die.”

Rating: 5 out of 5.

On the 17th April 2011 Game of Thrones first appeared on our screens I was not initially drawn to the show. I thought why is everybody’s so obsessed with a show that seems to glorify incest, brutal murders and foul language?

But boy was I wrong.

After a few episodes, I was hooked immediately to the plot and every season it got better and better. When the show finally ended on the 19th May 2019 it was like a piece of me had died with it. But lucky enough for us rumour has it that a prequel will be returning to our screens soon enough, the House of Dragons.

So, while we wait, I thought I would let you in on my top 5 favourite scenes from the whole series…

5. John Snow’s death (Season 5, Episode 10)

At number 5, we have John Snow’s death.

As I sat blubbering while this scene took place, I thought I just had to include it on this list! What makes this scene so good in my eyes is that it was so unexpected. I know, I know, in Game of Thrones NOBODY is safe (Ned Stark’s death showed us that), but I never thought they would do that to John. What really hit me was the fact that Olly betrayed him! So, when John sentenced him to death in Season 6 is it bad to say that I wasn’t disappointed…

4. Viserion is killed by The Night King (Season 7, Episode 6)

I can’t lie to you guys. I did shed a few tears during this scene. Like many of you, as a huge fan of the dragons, I was upset to see another one of them go. But although I was sad, I’m glad we got to see Viserion again as he broke down the Great Wall allowing the whitewalkers to charge into Winterfell.

3. Arya kills The Night King (Season 8, Episode 3)

Seven seasons brought us to this point, and all I can say is WOW.

From the soundtrack to the special effects this scene was perfect. As a huge fan of Arya, watching her grow from the young girl practising with her ‘needle’ to the brilliant fighter she became I thought it was perfect that she was the one to kill the Night King!

The only issue was why was it so damn dark!

2. Battle of the Bastards (Season 6, Episode 9)

I only have one word to describe this scene…

ICONIC.

As one of the greatest television episodes of all time, I would not have done you guys justice by not allowing you to re-watch this creative masterpiece once again. From the filming to the fighting, this scene was nothing short of perfection.

A/N: I cannot have been the only one that was convinced that John Snow was going to die all over again?

1. Destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor (Season 6, Episode 10)

Right, now I am sure many of you are shocked that I chose to put the destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor in 1st place, especially after the way I championed the Battle of the Bastards, but hear me out.

Personally, I don’t think that this scene gets the credit it deserves. When talking to Game of Thrones fans about iconic scenes, everyone mentions ‘The Red Wedding’, ‘Battle of the Bastards’ etc.… but everyone fails to remember this masterpiece. Everything about this scene was perfect. From its element of surprise to its cinematography, it worked beautifully, and for that I think it deserves top spot.

Comment below your thoughts on my list and your favourite Game of Thrones scenes.

As I know, many of you will come up with a completely different list from mine, but one thing we can all agree on, this is the GREATEST TV show of all time!

  1. I remember watching The Battle of the Bastards live and thinking how HBO had raised and set the bar so high for TV fantasy action. I had never seen anything like it and could not close my jaw lol. Great breakdown, thanks for your post!
