The Invisible Man

In a world where the possibilities in the horror movie genre are limitless, The Invisible Man gave a lacklustre performance.

Loosely based on the novel ‘The Invisible Man’ by H.G Wells, the film follows the main character, Cecelia, in her attempt to free herself from her abusive husband. But in doing so, Cecelia finds herself haunted by the presence of her late husband. The only thing is, nobody can see him.

The main issue I found when watching The Invisible Man was its mix between science-fiction and horror. As a fan of traditional horror films, when first watching, I felt as though the film had potential. Its horror film characteristic of a ghost-like entity made me relate the film to hits such as the 1982 horror The Entity and the modern-day The Conjuring series. But as the film began to progress and I realised that the invisible man was not an “entity” as such but rather a legitimate invisible man! From then on, I became somewhat detached from the plot. The idea of an invisibility suit just seemed too far-fetched for me, and I began to see the film as more of a science-fiction film than a horror. In all honesty, I personally did not find the film that scary, besides the sporadic jump scares.

In the films’ defence, it did include some exciting plot twists, especially at the closing stages of the film, and this did improve the films’ rating in my eyes. Additionally, the well-known cast members such as Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaids Tail), Aldis Hodge (Brian Banks) and Storm Reid (Euphoria) did entice me to carry on watching as I am a massive fan of their previous projects.

Overall, if you are a fan of science-fiction films, then The Invisible Man may be for you. But I felt that the plot was a bit too outlandish. But for those of you that did enjoy the film, I hear a sequel is on its way…
